What?
Please donate 4.5"squares of the most Nie-esque fabric you can find to make new vintage quilts for Nie's children! You are welcome to send as many squares as you would like and you can even label them to be donated to either Claire, Jane, Oliver, or Gigs' quilt specifically. Please include your name and where the fabric was mailed from so I can keep a record for the Nielsons. I will also pass along any messages or notes you would like to include. You can get a better idea of how the quilts will be made from Nie's friend Kelly, her detailed instructions are here http://kellymccaleb.typepad.com/photos/quilt_kit_instructions/index.html
**********************************************************
Why?
If you are here, you probably know why. Just in case, you can read about how the childrens' quilts, handmade by their mother out of their baby onsies were lost, http://blog.cjanerun.com/2008/08/crash-course.html.
Personally, I like to imagine some young mother treasuring the beautiful quilts found on the side of the road, snuggling her baby, and dreaming of the woman who carefully crafted them.

Hi thanks for contacting me. Yes count me in. I imagine so many people will want to help so I'll limit my patches to one each and get them in the post from here in the UK by airmail.
Wonderful idea and something which might help give the children a little bit of comfort.
What a thoughtful idea. My girls helped me find fabric last night to contribute. Can't wait to see the finished product!

Hi Candice, glad the squares arrived safely. I'm looking forward to the pics. Thank you for setting this up for the children.
I still think daily of them all. I hope that everyone will continue to cope in their essential support roles while the Nielsens heal. I hope that October Stephanie's fav month will be a truely miraculous one for her.
What a great idea! Thanks for letting me know about it, I would love to help. I will go and find some cute squares and mail them out to you.
You are so kind for doing this!
Just a thought. If there are extra squares maybe a quilt should be make for the Chief. He is also part of that family. We would hate for him to be left out. I can only imagine that you have squares over flowing your house. I just learned of this project and since I am cuting squares for three quilts for Christmas, I am cutting some extra to mail to you. Thanks for doing such a wonderful things. It broke my heart to hear that their quilts were lost. But that is only material things, the precious family connection is so much more important. Missouri squares are on their way.
I'm in! I've put a button on my page. What a wonderful thoughtful gift.
Candice! I got your message. I will get some squares to you as well. This is such a great thing you are doing. I love it! Hey since I am so close please let me know how I can help as far as putting the quilts together as well. I am no seamstress and certainly not a quilter but I can be taught! My life slows down after the show which opens this coming Friday!
Thank you so much for contacting me. I would love to help out. I will start searching for fabric today! :)
I commented earlier, but had another thought that probably has been thought of. If you have lots of extra blocks maybe lap quilts for Nie and Mr. Nielson. That would be a visual of the love and well wishes people are sending their way.
Of course I don't mind, what a fantastic idea! I'll be elbow deep in my fabric stash for sure, just trying to suss out anything nie-bebe worthy. Thanks for passing the message along to me!
Thank you so much for contacting me! What a beautiful idea this is! I will definitely send some fabric squares along.
Wow, thanks for thinking to include me, I feel so honored to do this! I had wanted to do something to contribute so I am definetly in, and am already off and looking for fabric...
What a wonderful project, thank you for letting me know about it! I am off to find the perfect pieces of fabric...
I have some wonderful, very "NieNie" fabric I'm sending...but could you answer a quick question?
Oh, my. I'm going to look like a quilting virgin here. When you say 4.5" squares, does that mean 4 1/5 inches on each side of the square?
Probably a dumb question, but I just want to make sure. :-)
You can email me through my blog...the address is in my profile. Thanks!
Hi Candice, I have a daughter, Candice! My daughter and her husband were in a plane crash going on 6 yrs. Dec. 5. I have alot of wonderfull Minky fabrics if you let me know kinda the colors in each quilt I could send some minky sq.s I would love to help!
Louie
Candice, are you in Arizona. I am at Gilbert in Power Ranch. Opps, gotta go watch Conference! Take care, maybe I could deliver some squares if you are close and if you need help putting them together I would be glad to help. I am a quilter.
Louie
I am in Chandler and would be happy to help with the piecing and sewing of all those squares. I will also look for a few next time I am at the fabric store. Thanks for the great idea.
When my mom finished her last chemo treatment for breast cancer 4 years ago, a friend collected fabric squares and put them together into a quilt like you are doing. But she also had someone stitch with their sewing machine the last name of who gave her the fabric on each piece. I thought that might be a fun idea for this quilt too. Maybe put the last name and the state where it came from so Nie would know that she has affected people throughout the world. Just an idea.
